An interior design project can be loads of fun. However, there is also the challenge of trying to avoid making a space that visitors have seen in a million other places. Fortunately, interior designers have some tricks for helping clients create unique, interesting, and personal spaces.

Develop a Focal Point

When someone enters a room, their eye should go to a particular point. Ideally, the design of the room helps the eye get there. For example, the orientation of the furniture in a living room might point toward a large fireplace.

Bear in mind, the focal point of a room should deserve to be a star. Don't just develop a focal point for the sake of having one. Find something that will command a starring role in the room. A large window with a scenic view, for example, is an excellent focal point.

Light the Room Well

Whenever possible, try to take advantage of natural light. Use windows and mirrors to direct light deeper into a room, especially if it's small or narrow. A bonus is a transition from natural light to artificial as the day changes will also alter the mood.

Use lights to create effects. A light in a recessed system, for example, can look chic and subtle. Conversely, a big and exposed lighting rig can illuminate a space well and become a conversation topic.

Area Rugs Are Your Friends

One of the best ways to maintain visual control of a space is to strategically deploy area rugs in rooms without carpeting. You can choose colors and designs that accentuate a room. This can give a floor a greater sense of artistry and personalization.

Use Colors

Even in a very modernist space, you can deploy spots of color to create accents. While you don't have to go overboard, a small patch of light green in a relatively white bathroom, for example, can make it less antiseptic-looking.

Artwork

A fast and simple way to put your stamp on an interior design is to set up artwork. Photos and paintings are excellent choices. You can personalize with family photos or choose something distinctively artsy. Make sure the artwork matches the tone of the room, though.

Angles

Contrasting angles can add significant interest to rooms. If space has a plain floor, for example, a rug with lines diagonal to the walls can lend the room a sense of space and movement. More aggressive interior designers may use zigzags to make a room pop.
